The Science Behind Our Swim Training Program

Why structure matters — and how it helps your swimmer succeed.

Hi All,

One of the questions I hear most often is: “How do you decide what we do at practice?” The truth is, there’s a lot more behind it than just writing sets on a whiteboard.

I recently gave a talk that explains the backbone of how our training program is structured. It runs about an hour (so you don’t need to watch it all at once), and I’ve added chapter markers so you can jump to the parts that interest you most.

This isn’t just for parents — I strongly encourage our swimmers to watch too. The more athletes understand why we train the way we do, the more ownership they take in their effort, attitude, and long-term success.

What makes this unique is that coaches from top universities (like Georgia, UCLA and others) and some of the best club programs in the country have asked me to share these methods so they can learn how to implement them with their own swimmers. That should tell you just how valuable and respected this approach is.

Here’s what you’ll learn if you watch:

  • Why “random workouts” waste time — and how structured planning leads to faster improvement.
  • How training phases (accumulation, realization, taper) build toward peak performance.
  • Why energy zones matter, and how they help swimmers train smarter, not just harder.
  • What sets our program apart, and why it gives every swimmer the best chance to succeed long-term.

Whether you’re a parent who wants to understand how practices are designed, or a swimmer who wants to know the why behind the training, this video is for you.
